Joan Elizabeth Doering passed away on December 12, 2022, her 90th birthday. She was born on a cold winter day in 1932 to Lester and Mildred Edgett, in Broughton, Kansas. She was the first of seven children in the family.
Joan graduated from Springfield High School in Springfield, Colorado. She then attended Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas, where she met her forever partner, Dick Doering. They married in Las Animas, Colorado on September 7, 1952. Two daughters were born to them before moving to Oregon in 1959, first in Hood River and then to Eugene in 1963.
Joan enjoyed singing and music. She played clarinet in high school, and sang in the college choir as well as church choirs. She and Dick were members of the Central Presbyterian Church choir for fifty years. She enjoyed bowling in her earlier years and Wii bowling in her later years, bowling more than one perfect game.
Dick and Joan did much traveling in their retirement years, across the US and in Europe. She traveled to China with her mother and through the Panama Canal with Dick and friends. They also enjoyed many camping trips with Oregon friends.
Joan worked most of her adult life in the medical field. She was a Certified Medical Assistant with the American Association of Medical Assistants, with a specialty certification in pediatrics. She spent many career years at the Children’s Clinic and at the South Hilyard Clinic in Eugene. She enjoyed spending time with her fellow medical assistants in the Lane Chapter of the AAMA.
Joan also belonged to PEO, volunteered at her church, and was a SHO volunteer at the Hult Center and a lifetime member, along with Dick, of the Very Little Theater. She enjoyed playing cards and walking with her friends, as well as spending time sewing, knitting and reading.
Joan is survived by her daughters Judy MacNaughton (Bruce) of Bend, and Diane Crandell, (Steve) of Portland. In addition she is survived by five grandchildren, three step grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and four step great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Ruth Reinhart of Atchison, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Doering, her parents and five brothers.
A memorial service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 21, at 2:00 PM. Gifts in Joan’s memory can be made to PEO Chapter DF, 1244 Delrose Drive, Springfield, OR 97477.
