Lora Ann (Sharkey) Dickinson died June 16, 2022, in Medford, Oregon. A graveside service is planned for 2:00 PM on June 30, 2022, at our family Plot in the Masonic Cemetery, 25th & University, located in Eugene, Oregon.
Mother was born July 25th 1933, in Campbell County Wyoming to Juanita McKern-Harper and Harold Harper. Her parents divorced in 1934. Juanita married a widower, Leo Sharkey, in 1935 and Leo adopted Lora and her two (2) older brothers, John (Allan) and Harold (Gene).
Mother attended Wild Horse Quick school, a one-room school with a potbellied stove, outside Gillette, Wyoming that was made up predominately of her and her siblings. When the Sharkey family relocated to the upper east side of the Hood River Valley, she was enrolled at Mt Hood Elementary School and graduated from Parkdale High School in 1954. Mother loved to ride horses, old Babe was her favorite, and she loved flowers, especially Shasta Daisies. Mother accepted a Union Pacific Railroad Scholarship to attend Oregon State University in the fall of 1954 and changed her studies to medicine. She moved to Eugene and graduated from Sacred Heart Nursing School, Eugene, Oregon in 1956. Lora pursued nursing with passion and devoted her life to the care of people. Lora Sharkey met Donald Dickinson on a "blind date" and married him June 17th, 1956.
Mom and Dad moved to Japan while he served in the United States Navy and mom worked at an Army Hospital. Upon Honorable Discharge and returning stateside, they moved to the Seattle area where Don went to work for Boeing, and Lora worked at Burien General Hospital until relocating back to Eugene in 1965. Mom worked in the Labor and Delivery department at Sacred Heart Hospital until 1975, when she left the hospital to manage an Obstetrics and Gynecology practice. At the time of her retirement, she was working at Lane Memorial Blood Bank.
Mother had been an active member and State President of the Rebekah and Odd Fellow Lodges, was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mom and Dad both loved to travel. Their home, "Oregon" was deeply explored. They enjoyed numerous travels together over the years. One favorite vacation that they enjoyed was to Alaska in celebration of their 49th anniversary (49th State, 49th Anniversary went together as did Lora and Don).
Traveling by ferry up the inside passage, they stopped at numerous ports to drive yet further to distant outposts along the wild unexplored areas. They ended up in Anchorage, and by automobile, they drove to the North Slope aka Prudhoe Bay. They took to the sea again to explore the Aleutian Island Chain, stopping at the major and minor historical sites.
