Kathleen Emiko Cunningham (nee Toyama) passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on July 29, 2020. She was 66 years old. Kathy was born in Osaka, Japan to David and Jean Toyama in 1954. Her father was in the US Army, and she lived in Japan, South Carolina, and Georgia before the family eventually settled in Eugene. Kathy graduated from South Eugene High School in 1972 and then started working at Kauffman’s in the credit department. It was there that she met the love of her life, Timothy Cunningham. They were married in 1975 and had twin daughters, Trisha and Jennifer. Kathy worked for the Springfield Courts for almost forty years, with more than two decades as the Court Supervisor. Kathy was active in the Japanese American community in Eugene, especially with taiko drumming. She was a member of Eugene Taiko for many years, and then enjoyed teaching taiko to the next generation with Waka Daiko. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and knitting, and she particularly enjoyed working with the Shoyu Sisters, and displaying and selling their creations at the Asian Celebration. Kathy loved spending time in her garden, and spent countless days tending, pruning, replanting, and perfecting. She was a lover of animals of all kinds, including her dogs, cats, and watching the birds in her garden. Kathy loved spending time at the Oregon Coast with Tim, taking in the scenery and eating at her favorite restaurants. She is survived by her husband Tim, daughters Trisha and Jennifer, grandchildren Rachel, Elizabeth, and Brian, and her brother Mark. She was kind, strong, and dedicated, and she will be greatly missed by those who knew her. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Kathy’s name to the Cascade Raptor Center.
