Vernon Barkhurst Vernon Barkhurst A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at First United Methodist Church in Eugene for Vernon Barkhurst of Eugene, who died Sept. 24 of age-related causes. He was 87. He was born April 26, 1922, in Sheridan, to Bert and Sadie Maulding Barkhurst. He married Phyllis Adams on May 27, 1945, in Silverton. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oregon. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart before leaving the military as a major. He was a teacher at Corvallis High School for seven years, then was a college administrator at the University of Oregon for about 25 years. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Scott Barkhurst of Eugene and Kent Barkhurst of Berkeley, Calif.; a sister, Jean Ann Barkhurst of Portland, and one granddaughter. Arrangements by Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene. Remembrances to First United Methodist Church, the Very Little Theater or the University of Oregon Foundation/College of Education Scholarship Fund.
